Description

A product roadmap is a high-level visual summary that maps out the vision and direction of your product offering over time. A product roadmap communicates the ‘why’ and ‘what’ behind what you're building. It’s a guiding strategic document as well as a plan for executing the strategy. The challenge for product management is that not all stakeholders within an organization agree on what a roadmap is and what it communicates.

The Sales world view can be quite different from the product/development worldview. For them, saying ‘yes’ to all customer requests should be our goal. Sales teams have been known to communicate functionality development as firm delivery commitments to customers. Executive leaders can also view roadmaps as time-bound commitments.

Other common misconceptions about roadmaps include:

  • A roadmap is a backlog.
  • A roadmap is a project management tracker.
  • A roadmap is a list of features.

In this session we will explore how to frame your roadmap with more authority using strategies for visualizing and presenting roadmaps for different audiences. We will explore approaches to reach common understanding that roadmaps are living documents and you should expect/embrace change.
